Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Updates to Practical Training Course for CE and CS Programs

Starting Fall 2026, the Practical Training course (CMPE 399 / CMPS 399) is removed from the electives of the current CE and CS 2024 study plans.

For Summer 2026 CMPE 399 / CMPS 399 will be offered as usual and will count as 3 CH elective for enrolled students.
In future study plans (expected from Fall 2027 onwards), the Practical Training will be introduced as a 0-credit core course graded on a Pass/Fail basis.
Students following current CE and CS 2024 study plans do not need to take the Practical Training as a core course and may fulfill elective requirements by registering other electives.

To be considered for enrollment in CMPE 399/CMPS 399 Practical Training, students must meet certain eligibility criteria established by the college and adhere to specific selection criteria designed to manage enrollment effectively. Below are the detailed requirements for eligibility and the method by which students will be selected for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

As per the College rules, a student is eligible to register for the internship course if he/she satisfies the following requirements and conditions:

The student has to have finished at least 90 credit hours by the end of Fall 2025.
The student has to have passed English language courses (ENGL 202 and ENGL 203) or equivalent.
No other courses can be combined with the internship during the summer semester.
The approval of the head of the department is required.
The internship must be within the state of Qatar; otherwise, formal approval from the head of the department and the Dean of CENG must be presented to QU higher management for approval.
The student should try hard to find a company for their internship otherwise CSE department will assist in finding a company but there is no guaranteed placement.
For CS students it is highly recommended to complete CMPS 310 Software Engineering so that they will have enough knowledge and skills to deliver a project during the internship.

Selection Criteria

Once eligibility is confirmed, students will be selected for CMPE/CMPS 399 Practical Training in the following order, based on their academic progression and requirements:

Students set to graduate in Summer/Spring 2026 with one remaining elective.
Students set to graduate in Fall 2026 with four remaining electives.
Students set to graduate in Fall 2026 with three remaining electives.
Students set to graduate in Fall 2026 with two remaining electives.
Students set to graduate in Fall 2026 with one remaining elective.
Students set to graduate in Spring 2027 with four remaining electives.
Students set to graduate in Spring 2027 with three remaining electives.

Goal

Provide a professional experience where knowledge from coursework is applied in a real-world setting. Enrich contacts and professional network.

Format

The internship is for 7 weeks full time.
Internship = supervised 7 weeks training period working on a project at a company
Educational experience intended to provide students with hands-on experience at the workplace
Student needs to design and develop a working hardware and/or software solution for your assigned project using a systematic development process.

Process

Early Spring of each academic year, CSE HoD appoint an Internship Coordinator to coordinate the whole process including:

Invite students to register their interest to take an internship.
Assist with students internship placement in collaboration with the department’s Internship Placement coordinator typically Ms. Shaikha Al-Jaber sh.aljaber@qu.edu.qa ) and CENG.
Company visits during the internship.
Coordinate the grading of the internship deliverables.

Grading

Apart from the progress report in week 6, the students will also submit Journal 1 and Journal2 after week 2 and week 6 (template will be provided) to give their reflection and feedback. These journals are intermediate progress reports that will help students to share their experiences at the start and middle of the internship. It encourages students to identify what they learned, evaluate and recognize challenges they faced, and consider how they can improve their learning process in the future. It also encourages students to connect their experiences with personal and professional goals

Important notes

Since the internship for CE/CS is elective and due to the short period between semesters, the CSE department decided to offer internship ONLY in summer. Students can take other electives to graduate.
